Shelter and sheep

A hobby farm to breed sheep for sustainable income

In 2018, our family put forward a suggestion to start breeding sheep. They saw this as a long term plan that could potentially create good income for the family and work toward them becoming more self sufficient.

Sheep are notorious for breaking out and running away, so to start this project, a shelter would need to be built. This would also assist with providing overnight protection as thieves are also notorious where sheep are involved! We provided small funding to start with the shelter construction.

The family were able to buy cement to make their own
5" blocks, commonly used for construction in Ghana. A solid house was constructed with a lockable door for overnight care. A fenced outside area was erected for shelter during the day. Two sheep (male and female) were purchased and presented with their new home. A few months later, a beautiful little lamb was born.......... Then the trouble began!

Despite having a lockable door, and a seemingly secure shelter for the sheep,  it was not long before the little lamb attracted attention and thieves came in the dark of the night to steal the sheep. This caused a great deal of stress and sleepless nights to the family. To make the shelter more secure a steel door was constructed to deter the thieves, keep the sheep safe overnight and give peace of mind to the family.
